The Environment Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised a Round Table Discussion No. 1 Post International Climate Summit 2021 on 3rd of December 2021 with Eminent Speakers Dr. Karen Landmark, Chair of the Board, Greenstat Asia, Norway, Mr. Ed Gillespie, Director, Greenpeace UK and Ms. Solveig Aamodt, Senior Researcher, Climate Policy Group at CICERO.

In his presidential address, Mr. Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI mentioned about the International Climate Summit held on the 3rd of September 2021 organised jointly with Invest India in partnership with NITI Aayog, Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change and with the support of several Ministries of Government of India. The summit deliberations included setting up of a International Hydrogen Alliance similar to the International Solar Alliance and Centre of Excellences (COE) for Hydrogen across all the states.

Further, he congratulated the Government for tremendous success at the COP-26 Summit at Glasgow and said that the five elixirs announced by our Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji will prove to be an exceptional contribution by India towards climate action and that we should all agree with ‘LIFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment), the new mantra for sustainable development proposed by him to ensure peaceful co-existence with nature.

He Lastly mentioned that the need of the hour is a transformational system change that calls for increased international cooperation. It is clearly apparent that climate crises are inter-linked and that we need to deal with them holistically, said Mr. Multani.

Dr J P Gupta, Chair, Environment Committee, PHDCCI while giving the Introductory Remarks talked about the negotiations at COP-26 Summit at Glasgow. He also encouraged the speakers to shed a light on Ancient wisdom to search for answers for decarbonization.

Dr. Karen Landmark, Chair of the Board, Greenstat Asia in her address talked about the initiatives taken by Greenstat Asia in the field of Green Energy. She also talked about strengthening the bilateral cooperation between India and Norway through Centre of Excellences for Hydrogen capacity building. The goal of India in being self reliant reflects the need for rapid R&D and technology deployment in areas of electrolyzers, storage and transfer and also setting up of pilot plants to test technology and to speed up the process of commercialization, said Dr. Karen. She also talked about the COP-26 summit wherein countries were urged to renew efforts to raise ambitions on cutting emissions and increase climate financing.

Mr. Ed Gillespie, Director, Greenpeace UK gave an insightful presentation to deliberate on the gravity of climate change mitigation. In his presentation, he compared the climate change situation similar to the COVID-19 situation wherein he said that there is a need to implement climate protective measures in order to “flatten the curve”. He also talked about how the 10% richest population worldwide are responsible for almost half of total lifestyle consumption emissions. Lastly, he said that there is need for system innovation, redesign and transformation in order to regenerate the ecosystem.

Ms. Solveig Aamodt, Senior Researcher, Climate Policy Group at CICERO in her address talked about the ongoing research projects on India at CICERO in collaboration with various Indian Institutes. She also discussed on the importance of climate policies in mitigating climate change.

Mr. Mahendra Rustagi, Co-chair, Environment Committee, PHDCCI while delivering the concluding remarks talked about the benefits of having Centre of Exellences in Hydrogen. Further, he thanked all the panelists and participants for attending the Round Table Discussion No.1 post ICS 2021
