PHDCCI Hosts Safety & Fire Summit 2024: Urges Industry Collaboration and Enhanced Safety Standards

The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) successfully organized the Safety & Fire Summit at PHD House, New Delhi, focusing on the importance of safety across all sectors. The event brought together key government officials and industry experts to discuss safety standards, fire prevention, and emergency preparedness.

Dr. Ranjeet Mehta, CEO & Secretary General, PHDCCI, highlighted the urgent need to prioritize safety. He emphasized that while safety is often a secondary concern, it must become a primary focus in all industries. Dr. Mehta also stressed the importance of integrating safety education into school curricula to create a culture where safety is valued from an early age.

Shri Ashish Tripathi (IRS), Chief Vigilance Officer, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), discussed the instrumental role BIS plays in setting and enforcing safety standards, including fire safety. He noted that BIS has standardized over 460 products and plays a crucial role in international safety standardization. Shri Tripathi stressed that through collaboration and adherence to these standards, safer environments can be created, helping to prevent tragedies.

Shri Atul Garg, Director of Delhi Fire Services, addressed the challenges faced by firefighters in Delhi, particularly the disparities between regulated and unregulated areas. He urged industry stakeholders to collaborate in raising fire safety awareness, especially in informal sectors where safety measures are often lacking.

Shri Umesh Sharma, Additional Director General of Civil Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, spoke about the significance of pre-planning and community preparedness during emergencies. He introduced the Yuga Apda Mitra scheme, which aims to train volunteers to enhance emergency response efforts and strengthen community resilience.

The session was moderated by Dr. Jatinder Singh, Deputy Secretary General, PHDCCI; he emphasized the need for more engagements on safety and fire awareness to build safer communities. The summit concluded with a strong call for industry collaboration, adherence to safety standards, and the need for ongoing dialogue and action to improve safety practices across all sectors.
