PNGRB Member Emphasizes Vision for Odisha’s Energy Future at PHDCCI Seminar

Bhubaneswar, Odisha – December 20, 2024 – The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) hosted a seminar on “Competitive Sourcing of Natural Gas,” bringing together government officials, industry leaders, and energy experts. Discussions centered on expanding natural gas availability and infrastructure to benefit local communities, stimulate industrial growth, and create a cleaner, more efficient energy environment across Odisha.

In his keynote address, Mr. A.K. Tiwari, Member of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), outlined the government’s vision for improving natural gas accessibility in the region. He emphasized the importance of infrastructure expansion, including maximizing the use of LNG terminals and weaving a “spider net” pipeline system to ensure efficient delivery of gas. Regulatory reforms, he noted, can open the door for private investment and help build an energy network that meets the state’s current and future needs.

Mr. Tiwari stressed that improving gas infrastructure offers significant benefits. The Dhamra LNG Terminal, he said, stands as a strategic asset ready to meet the growing energy demands of Eastern India, including Odisha.

Mr. Deepak Mehta, Chief Business Officer of the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX), underscored the need for infrastructure investments and fair, transparent regulations that can help create a vibrant gas ecosystem.

Dr. Jatinder Singh, Deputy Secretary General of PHDCCI, pointed to Odisha’s strategic position in shaping India’s gas-based future, highlighting that pipelines and domestic gas resources will play a central role in fostering economic development and stability.

Mr. Sanjeev Mahapatra, Honorary Secretary of the Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCIL), reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to advocating policies that strengthen the local gas economy.

A panel discussion moderated by Mr. Ajay Mishra, AVP at IGX, brought together senior representatives from major energy companies. The distinguished panelists included Mr Suman Mishra, GM – Gas, IOCL; Mr. Shailendra Voleti, Zonal General Manager, GAIL; Mr. J S Khanuja, GM, HPCL and Mr. Sunit Verma, Principal Consultant, PNGRB. They examined how best to connect Odisha’s pipelines with the national gas network and identified the steps needed—policy support, consistent investment, and regulatory backing—to ensure that this growth benefits everyone, from local families to large industries.

The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Mr. Rupesh K. Pandey, Senior Secretary of PHDCCI, who expressed gratitude to the esteemed speakers and attendees for their insights and participation.

The seminar concluded with a call for greater collaboration among public institutions, private businesses, and community stakeholders.
